Presentation of the workshop

The MIFID directive has been in force in the European Union's legal systems for six months now, and financial institutions are promoting different strategies with the dual intent of 1) complying with existing compliance regulations and 2) exploiting the directive to gain a competitive advantage. For now, there seem to be many practices that allow for the transposition of MiFID into banking and financial organizations, so different strategic models are emerging, particularly in policies for marketing financial instruments and retail customer management and profiling. The workshop aims to explore issues related to strategic choices involving MiFID both by delving into organizational and information systems reflections and by analyzing the evolution of the European financial market. In particular, the day's talks will seek to answer the following questions:
  • What are the new practices of business activities in light of MiFID's new administrative requirements?
  • What are the new business opportunities arising from the implementation of the directive?
  • What are the different ways of transposing the directive, and on what variables do they depend?
  • What are the new parameters for training personnel in charge of selling financial instruments?
  • What role does technology play in critical aspects of MiFID, such as managing client profiling and best execution?
  • What are the new international arrangements that result from the abolition of the concentration rule?
